should be; is supposed to be (expectation)

はずだ states a confident expectation based on reasoning or evidence. Attach it to a plain-form verb/adjective, a noun with の, or a na-adjective with な. はずがない means there's no way that's true.

Examples

• 彼かれは約束やくそくしたから、来くるはずです。

  Kare wa yakusoku shita kara, kuru hazu desu.

  He promised, so he should come.

• そんなはずはない。

  Sonna hazu wa nai.

  That can't be right.
