even though; despite (with surprise or complaint)

のに marks an unexpected or unwelcome contrast, often carrying frustration or surprise. Attach it to a plain-form verb/adjective, to a noun/na-adjective with な. The result clause goes against what the first clause would lead you to expect.

• 薬くすりを飲のんだのに、まだ熱ねつが下さがりません。

  Kusuri o nonda noni, mada netsu ga sagarimasen.

  Even though I took medicine, my fever still hasn't gone down.

• 日曜日にちようびなのに、働はたらかなければなりません。

  Nichiyoubi na noni, hatarakanakereba narimasen.

  Even though it's Sunday, I have to work.
