passive: is done (to someone)

The passive shifts focus to the receiver of an action. Ru-verbs add られる (食べる to 食べられる), u-verbs change the final sound to the a-row plus れる (読む to 読まれる), する becomes される, 来る becomes 来られる. The agent is marked with に. It often conveys an action suffered by the subject.

• 電車でんしゃで足あしを踏ふまれた。

  Densha de ashi o fumareta.

  My foot got stepped on on the train.

• この本ほんは多おおくの人ひとに読よまれています。

  Kono hon wa ooku no hito ni yomarete imasu.

  This book is read by many people.
