The passive shifts focus to the receiver of an action. Ru-verbs add られる (食べる to 食べられる), u-verbs change the final sound to the a-row plus れる (読む to 読まれる), する becomes される, 来る becomes 来られる. The agent is marked with に. It often conveys an action suffered by the subject.
