now that; since (given that)

以上は means that now that a fact is established, a natural obligation or resolve follows. Attach it to a plain-form verb/adjective, a noun with である, or a na-adjective with である. The second clause often expresses determination or duty.

Examples

• 約束やくそくした以上いじょうは、守まもるべきだ。

  Yakusoku shita ijou wa, mamoru beki da.

  Now that you've promised, you should keep it.

• 引ひき受うけた以上いじょうは、最後さいごまでやります。

  Hikiuketa ijou wa, saigo made yarimasu.

  Since I've taken it on, I'll see it through to the end.
