while; on the other hand

一方で presents two parallel or contrasting aspects happening at once. Attach it to a plain-form verb/adjective, a noun with である, or a na-adjective with な. Unlike 反面, the two sides need not be opposites of the same subject.

Examples

• 輸出ゆしゅつが増ふえる一方いっぽうで、輸入ゆにゅうは減へっている。

  Yushutsu ga fueru ippou de, yunyuu wa hette iru.

  While exports are increasing, imports are decreasing.

• 彼かれは厳きびしい一方いっぽうで、優やさしい面めんもある。

  Kare wa kibishii ippou de, yasashii men mo aru.

  He's strict, but on the other hand he has a kind side too.
